Today I have the pleasure of hosting a fellow fantasy author, Charity Bradford, who is about to release her debut novel Magic Wakes.  I’ve asked her a bunch of questions about her writing and publishing process, so let’s see what she has to say.

When did you first start writing and how long did it take you to finish the writing your latest novel? Is this the first book you have finished?

I’ve played around with writing all my life, but didn’t really get serious until 2008. I still have story starts from my teen years that I shake my head over. LOL. The Magic Wakes is the first book that I finished, but not the only one. I set it aside for a year to write another book before pulling it back out. While editing and revising I wrote another 1 ½ books. Each one helped me write a little cleaner, a little deeper. With the lessons learned from each of those other stories, I returned to Magic and worked to improve it.

What was the biggest obstacle in getting your book published? As I understand, you went the traditional publishing route. Did it take you a long time to find a publisher?

Patience. Writing something that other people can read and enjoy is not as easy as I thought it would be. I’m still learning, but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Many times I thought I should just self publish my book, however, part of “success” for me was finding someone who believed in me enough to take me on.

I started querying agents in 2010 and had some success with partial requests. It quickly became frustrating because I couldn’t get enough feedback from the rejections to know what to work on. In the end I realized my genre mash up might be making it hard to place my book. That’s when I started looking at mid-sized publishers. I have no regrets with my decision. Maybe an agent is somewhere in my future, but I’m glad I stayed with what I felt inside instead of trying to fit a mold just to sell my book.

Tells us a bit more about your novel? Where is it set? Who are the main characters? What is the main conflict?

The Magic Wakes is set on a planet in a binary star system with three moons in its sky. My main character, Talia, is a scientist who has spent her entire life searching for the existence of life out in space. Why? Because she’s dreamed of an alien invasion since birth. An invasion that always ends in her death. She knows that no one will believe her dreams so she must find scientific proof. She’s always hidden her magical talents.

Landry Sutton is a major in the Royalist army and cousin to the prince with magic of his own. His ability to sense other’s emotions convinces him that Talia may be the traitor he’s been looking for. He pushes his attraction to the back of his mind and digs into her past until one confrontation leaves them both shaking. One touch and they connect telepathically.

Things heat up as they learn to trust one another as the invading force arrives and Talia is faced with her nightmares at last.

Is your book a part of a series or a standalone book?

Both. :) The Magic Wakes is the first in a four book series, but it can stand alone. I wrap this book up nicely while only hinting at the next book.

What advice would you offer beginning indie writers?

1. Don’t give up.

2. Learn patience.

3. Learn that a quality product takes time.

What types of promotion are doing and how successful are you finding it?

Most of my promotion is online (this tour) or through friends. I’ve been blessed to move a lot over the years and I’ve made wonderful friends all over the country. These people are my team. They’re happy for me and keep telling all their friends about my book. I’m hoping that’s the best way to get and keep things rolling—word of mouth.

I also set up a Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CharityBradford.SendekSaga) and webpage (http://charitybradford.com) and bought bookmarks. There’s a Goodreads giveaway (http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/39444-the-magic-wakes) where you can win a signed copy of my book and a giveaway on my blog where you can win an amethyst necklace like the one Talia wears in the book. (http://charitywrites.blogspot.com/p/i-finally-picked-which-two-necklaces.html)

If you were stranded on a deserted island what 3 things would you want with you?

A notebook, sunscreen, and my hubby. That sounds about perfect to me.

Where can readers find your book?

It’s available for preorder on:

Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/The-Magic-Wakes-Charity-Bradford/dp/1937178307/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359149133&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Magic+Wakes)

More about The Magic Wakes:

Talia has a secret, one that will save her world and yet rip it apart. Only she can decide if the price is worth it.

Scientist Talia Zaryn has always had visions of an alien invasion and of her own death. She’s kept it a secret, hoping they are nothing more than childish nightmares. But when her face in the mirror matches that of her dreams, she fears the dreams are prophetic. Talia must prove that life exists beyond their planet, Sendek; perhaps then people will prepare to fight.

Talia’s work at the Space Exploration Foundation leaves no time for personal relationships, but Major Landry Sutton isn’t looking for a friend. He’s looking for a traitor. His ability to sense emotions convinces him Talia is that traitor until a touch sizzles between them. In an instant their minds are connected and they can communicate telepathically. Just as the two begin to trust each other, the invading force arrives.

Talia and Landry must uncover the secrets of Sendek’s past if they hope to defeat these terrifying creatures. And Talia is the key—if only she can learn to trust the magic coursing through her veins.
