Mathion: Book One of the Mavonduri Trilogy by Jeff Shanley

Right now I want to welcome back Jeff Shanley, the author of the Mavonduri Trilogy. Today he releases the expanded and revised version of Mathion, the first book in his Mavonduri Trilogy. Let’s see what he has to say.

So, the day of the long awaited release of Mathion expanded is upon us! tell us a bit more about what readers can expect form the revised and updated version?

Yes, Vanna, the release date is finally here, and I’m VERY excited! This edition is really the story as it was meant to be told, think of it as my “director’s cut”– readers can expect new scenes, new characters, and of course the Appendices and they’ll also get a sneak peek at the second installment of the Mavonduri Trilogy, The Last Ascension.

What prompted you to expand your debut work?

It was really a desire to improve and fine-tune my craft. I had always intended to release a “deluxe edition” (meaning with Appendices to the book) but as I reread the text itself I found that, as an (currently) independent author I had both the chance and ability to refine the text, so as to tell this story as it was meant to be told.

Is there a special reason you select September 22 as your release date?

Well as you know, I’m a HUGE Tolkienite, and so I thought what better day to release this book than on Bilbo & Frodo’s birthday? Haha

How far along with the rest of the trilogy are you, when can we expect book 2 and book 3?

Book Two is coming along quite well. It’s definitely taken a turn for the darker, which I’m very excited about. As for a timeframe, well, I honestly can’t say. I really want to work hard on this book and get to a point where I really can’t make it any better than it is. And that’s for the readers’ sakes, I really want them to enjoy these books as much as I enjoy writing them. I won’t pull a George R. R. Martin on all of you, saying “it’ll come out next year” and then take six or seven years to write it, but I would say that if you follow me on Twitter (@Mavonduri) you’ll be privy to a lot to follow.

Where can readers find your book?

MATHION: BOOK ONE OF THE MAVONDURI TRILOGY (Standard Edition) is available on Amazon for 0.99¢, and look for the Revised & Expanded Edition there as well!

On a more personal note, when did you know you wanted to become a writer?

When I was very young. I have always been a very creative person, and so I’ve always told stories in some fashion. But Lord of the Rings really hit me hard when I read it, and not simply because of the story, but because Tolkien had taken the time and effort to craft myth. Only a very select few authors can make such a claim.

Who encouraged you the most in your writing career?

My family in general, and friends as well. However I’ve also been lucky enough to get a few fans in the short time that MATHION’s been published, and that is a true blessing.

Where can readers find out more about you and your work in general?

As always, the best place to find me in (somewhat) real time is Twitter, @Mavonduri. However I also have a blog, and that’s where you can REALLY pick my brain, and see my process as an author. I also have a collection of movie reviews from this past summer, so check those out as well.

Do you have any plans for new stories, new books?

I’ve tried to focus mainly on THE LAST ASCENSION, but I have begun tinkering with another novel (and potential series) idea, BESIEGED. I don’t want to give much away yet, but it’s a very slick espionage actioner with some scifi elements to it.

What made you choose the self-publishing route vs traditional publishing?

The thing is, my ultimate goal is to see my books in print. But self-publishing is a great way for me to get my name out there, get feedback on my work, and to connect with other authors. Speaking of which, I hope you’ll come by the Mavonduri Trilogy Blog for an interview soon! Thanks for having me, Vanna, great questions as always.

Thanks for stopping by to answer my questions, Jeff! And I will take you up on your offer, now that the release of Decision Maker is nearing. Good luck with your “new” book and I hope it is the first of many!

Jeff’s Bio:

Born and raised in South Florida, Jeff Shanley began writing stories at a very young age. But it wasn’t until reading J. R. R. Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS that he found true inspiration, and using his love of werewolf folklore and Atlantis mythology he embarked on his epic fantasy masterwork, THE MAVONDURI TRILOGY.
