Author Interview with Elise VanCise

by Vanna on December 18, 2012

When did you first start writing and how long did it take you to finish the writing your latest novel? Is this the first book you have finished?

I started writing in 2006. I participated in NaNoWriMo and finished my first full length novel In the Dark in 24 days.

My latest novel Every Waking Moment is still in the process. This one is a NaNo Novel too :) I’m hoping to have it completed soon and have it in readers hands early 2013.

What was the biggest obstacle in getting your book published?

I think the biggest obstacle in publishing is myself. This isn’t a business for thin skins and lightweights. You have to get in there and make it happen. Sometimes it’s hard and can be discouraging when your rejected or get a blah review.  A writer has to remember one thing, don’t give up.

Tells us a bit more about your novel? Where is it set? Who are the main characters? What is the main conflict?

Every Waking Moment , a thriller set in sunny Florida. Susan Thomas has been missing for eight years. Her brother, Dr. Robert Thomas, decided it was time to stop the obsessive search and move on with is own life. Until a badly beaten and burned, Jane Doe arrived in his morgue wearing Susan’s bracelet, and still alive.

After a second attempt to kill Jane Doe, she wakes with no memory. Robert must help Jane unlock her memories to find who wants her dead and maybe his sister still alive.

Which character from your novel(s) are you most attached to and why?

That’s a difficult question. They’re all my darlings lol. There’s a bit of me in each one.

Who are your main writing influences?

Steven King, Mark Twain, Elmore Leonard, a few others. I learn a little something new with every author I read. That’s the magic of reading.

What advice would you offer beginning indie writers?

Say thank you when you’re rejected or get bad reviews. Those aren’t negative things, really. Those comments or reviews let us know where our weak spots are. What parts of our story we need to strengthen, or technique we need to work on. Even the big times like Steven King or Nora Roberts get bad reviews, so don’t take it personally. Use the negative to make your skills stronger.

What types of promotion are doing and how successful are you finding it?

I’m shameless in leaving cards and bookmarks places, I hand them out to people I meet or store clerks etc… I have accounts on all the social media networks and try to keep them updated with my blog and website too. I do blog and live event appearances. I think my most successful endeavor has been Triberr. My following and readership on all channels has grown thanks to the help of my tribemates. This is one tool that really works.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

I would go to the past, maybe the 1800s when the country was beginning to really grow.

If you were stranded on a deserted island what 3 things would you want with you?

A stack of books, a never ending supply of paper and pencils, and Russell Crowe.

Where can readers find your book?
